Help: Flying with a Toddler

OK Moms, come on in! We'll be traveling with Jack when he will be ~17 months old... So let's hear your flying tips for a rambunctious little one!

Specifically, here are a few of my questions/concerns:

  • I've read that the "best/safest" way is to give them their own seat. They fly free under 2 which was our original plan but after reading the arguments as to why they should have their own seats (in terms of antsiness/sleeping etc) we're thinking that may be a better fit. Jack is not a "sit still on our lap and be content" kind of guy...

  • I also have read about the Child Aviation Restraint Systems... Are they necessary? Anyone use them or know about them?

LINK

  • Finally, we'll be bringing hubby's iPad with games/shows/etc... Are there infant headphones? Will he even keep them on? Anyone have them?

But I'm open to hear any advice/thoughts you have.

Thanks!!

Headphones are a must, planes can get noisy. I'd also recommend bringing his carseat on the plane with you, it makes a world of difference. You can buckle them in jus like in a car and they'll feel safe and comfortable. It may be a pain to carry it around, but definitely worth it. You can even buy one of those roller attachments to make the carseat rollable through the airport. Also, bring a lot of snacks. Last year we flew to the Bahamas and were stuck on the runway in the plane for four hours before we took off and ended up going through all the food we brought.

I would say to bring his car seat on the plane with you. It is nice too that you can gate check a stroller so you don't have to worry about trying to get through an airport with you hands completely full. If your son uses a pacifier bring it, or if not something for him to suck on while taking off and landing. Sugar free suckers are good. It helps with the ear pressure. Over the ear style earphones would work. I would just say try them out before you go to make sure he will keep them on. Most important thing I would say is not to worry about any one around you. I know from experience, even a sleeping child can make some passengers judgmental. It can be really stressful and when you get stress so does your baby. Hope all this helps! Have tons of fun!
